Three Ways The Sun Makes Us Just Like Superman
Okay, maybe not “just like” Superman but pretty darn great for mere mortals. Superman on Earth has great powers. He gets these great powers from our big, beautiful sun. The sun certainly gets a bad rap thanks to nasty skin cancer but in moderation (like most things), the sun can be quite powerful for us too!
Here’s a few things we have in common with our favorite superhero (debatable, I know!), Superman.
1. Super Strength: While we’ll never be strong enough to leap a tall building, the sun does provide bone strengthening vitamin D. Calcium gets most of the praise for strong bones but it can’t do the job alone. Our bodies need vitamin D in order to absorb the calcium. I’d say vitamin D is a pretty great side kick! Our sun provides vitamin D and we don’t need to spend a day at the beach to get what we need. Just about 15 minutes a day without sunscreen provides a nice dose. Shoot, we can get that on a quick dog walk or by taking our morning coffee on the porch.
2. Mental Powers: Superman’s high level intelligence and memory come from his exposure to our sun. It may not be quite the same for us but, the sun can help with our mood and being in a good mood is certainly good for our mental powers, right? Sunshine boosts our serotonin which is a hormone that makes us feel happy. Make sure you get outdoors as much as you can in the winter months because that blast of sunshine is also good for SAD, aka Seasonal Affective Disorder. No winter blues around here!
3. Healing Power: Superman has the ability to heal his body and regenerate fast. While we certainly don’t want to put ourselves in the same situations as he does, we can be happy to know the sun can help give a boost to our immune system. Sunlight encourages white blood cell production which can help us fight off sickness and infections… nemeses of humans!
There you go. Don’t you feel like a superhero now?
